A Golf Club event like that, here in the UK, would probably have been a black-tie 'do', in which case I should have...

Overhere the black-tie is almost an endangered species (a pitty...a crime), most think they're well dressed when they wear a tie with whatever horrific combination you can think of.

The dress code went completely down the drain...very few know how to dress properly these days.

No dress "advise" on the invitation....no black-tie, no tenue de ville, no nothing...people just do what they think is right...and that's most often not a pretty sight.

Seen a handful of suits and that's about it...most women do much better by the way.

To tell the truth, the black-tie has very nearly slipped into oblivion here too - but NOT for events at such august locations as Golf Clubs. The black-tie is still very much de rigeur for dinners/receptions in establishments of that kind.

Yes, on the whole the ladies DO still make a special effort to dress-up when going out for the evening, and to functions of the kind you attended. I have heard them say that it is partly because they are paying a compliment to their partners, or that they feel they owe it to their husabands. Why then do the men so often look so scruffy alongside their wives? Do they not also "owe it" to their ladies by similarly making a special effort?

This is so evident on TV at the numerous 'Awards' ceremonies. The gals (nearly) always look dressed up and glamourous, whilst their menfolk appear to have crept out of haystacks! Tousled hair, crumpled open-neck shirts and blue jeans, delightfully set off perhaps with a Dress jacket/Tux!! Frankly, I believe they are insulting the ladies by turning up like that.

Anyway, I am fast taking this 'off topic', which is an insult to you, Robin. I am glad your appearance was so admired and that you both had such an enjoyable evening. Congratulations again.

HA! The women don't care about us. They're trying to out-do each other.

Men have no such hang-ups. That's why we wear what we want, unless nagged unmercifully to do otherwise.
