What Tartan are you thinking about renting?

For $169 US plus shipping, you probably will be spending an upward of $250 US on the rental. It is kind of expensive, don't you think? What is the budget you are working on right now. It may be possible to purchase a used package for around $200 US.

    Raphael,
Do you know of a place that sells used packages for about that price?

kiltrental offers a deal where the cost of your rental can be put towards purchasing a used kilt (or whatever you rented). I am not certain the exact details, but I think they are listed on the website. She does sell used items.

    ebay?

$200 may be pushing it for the whole outfit, but it is possible to get used kilt for under $200 US and rent the jacket. and I may have a dress sporran to let go for cheap. Every thing is possible.

I get your point Raphael. I have used eBay a few times on items from $10 to $13,000. But the kilt that my dad bought on eBay was the worst eBay deal I have seen - I think it put me off.

One factor that has me leaning towards renting a package is that my time is limited (I am supposed to be working on Newtonian physics in non-intertial reference frames at this moment), and waiting for the perfect kilt to show up on eBay, and then the perfect jacket, and so on will be extra work that I don't have time for. Also, the event I am planning for may very well not come to pass. I might not know until six weeks before the date. And finally, with a rental there is very little commitment. This will be an opportunity to see if I like Highland dress, before taking the very expensive plunge.

Except they only rent Irish National, Dress Gordon, Black Watch, and Royal Stewart. But good news for others who aren't as picky as me about tartan.

By the way, I went to a Canadian Orthodox wedding last year. Very interesting from my perspective as a modern Mennonite. I quite enjoyed it, although my arthritic wife wished she could have sat. Tiny church building, big wedding.

Tartan Town rent the Prince Charlie Jacket for $75.

Another suggestion is to put a want ad here. May be something will pop up. If you tell us exactly what you are looking for, may be some one here can hook you up with the perfect package. Don't under estimate the power of Xmarks.

    BTW, I am Tsawwassen.
Which Stewart tartan are you looking for in particular? Here are a few options http://kiltstore.net/sr_swhdr_eighty...=%27Stewart%27

You may run into a issue when trying to rent, as few (if any) places carry a really wide selection of tartans for rent. It is usually the generic tartans that are available. If you are just trying to see how much you enjoy wearing Highland Dress, it may be easier to just rent the generic (Royal Stewart) for the experience. When it comes time to purchase a kilt, your tartan options will than be endless.

Alternatively, Stillwater sells the Black Stewart in Standard version for $60-$80 US http://www.stillwaterkilts.com/stdkilt.html Get the 2006 model though. Pair that with the Sporran Raphael may have for sale, some hose and flashes, and a regualr dress shirt and casual-formal is done.
