Kilted at a Benefit
I'd agree with the solid black, 646guy, can't see how any reasonable person could object to a black kilt for workwear. IMHO tartan kilts attract much more attention than solid black. I regularly wear my solid black heavyweight in court, including today.

Brian,
Please be wary of wearing 'normal' jackets, such as the blazer, with your kilts. Jackets not designed to be worn with kilts can look dreadful because they are too long in the 'body' and will make you appear to have stunted legs.
Apart from that, they impede the swing of the kilt's pleats! That is why kilt jackets are no longer than just below the hip, or to the bottom of the 'fell' (the point where the kilt's pleats hang free from being stitched).
Just a friendly word of warning!!

I'd second Hamish on the jacket - I team up my black heavyweight kilt with a black Argyle jacket for court duty.

I work at award shows in NYC in the talent department. Basically anyone who goes on stage to present an award or to perform has someone from the talent department assigned to them to make sure that we know where they are at all times. If they have to go to the bathroom, you take them, wait outside the main door, and then walk them back. If they want water, you get it for them. It's a pretty cool gig and I've gotten to work with and meet great people such as Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Kevin Clash (who does the voice of Elmo on Sesame Street), Rosie Perez, Paula Abdul, Eminem, and more. My favorite though has to be Laura Linney. I've worked with her at the last two Tony Awards and she's a sweetheart (and loves working with me which is a total bonus)....

I say go with what make you feel most confortable. I wear my tartan kilt to every formal event I attent ( except funerals. Most people here would make too much of a scene about it. No need to upset the family). Keep in mind you are wearing the kilt because you want to, not because someone told you to.
