Close your eyes and surrender to your KILTED dreams.
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before.
Close your eyes, let your pleats begin to soar!

    And you'll live as you've
    never lived before...

apologies to ALW (although he still owes us an apologhy for Cats but i digress...)

Not everyone shares this opinion. Hamish doesn't, I don't and neither did Scotty Thompson of "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt" fame.

Most folks will tell you NOT to put the sporran strap through the belt loops. It prevents you from sliding the sporran to the side when you need to. There's less agreement about the belt. I put it through the belt loops because that's what belt loops are for. You make your own choice about how you wish to wear your belt.

Hmmm... this is an "urban kilt legend", right? If this was true, then shouldn't they be called sporran strap loops?? ... and wouldn't it make more sense to size and locate them to suit a sporran strap rather than a wide belt?? This kilt stuff is just too myterious sometimes!

(Did you know that the holes in the top of shoes is not really for laces but actually for ventilation!! ... and clothing is more comfortable when worn inside-out!! ... but that's getting way off-topic.)

Barb's book on kiltmaking goes through the expanation of this. Here is the sidebar on page 104:

Of course, this is from a traditional viewpoint. Much of that tradition originated in the courts and military of England during the (tartan) Prohibition.

Many of my modern, casual cotton kilts have belts integrated into the waistband because that's how the kilts stay on.

To paraphrase Barb: Do what you wish - just make sure it looks good!
