Welcome to the board, John. My brother-in-law was stationed at Kaneohe (sp?) around twenty years ago when he was with the USMC. You'll get lots of good advice here. How much are you thinking of spending?

I was looking for a traditional Scottish tartan (most likely Black Watch) for more casual wear. For price reasons, I would most likely opt for something synthetic over wool and medium weight over heavy weight. The real problem I'm having, however, is finding a good, trustworthy website from which to order. Any suggestions?

Now that's insane.... A fellow Hoosier on the island WITH an interest in kilts!
For right now, I'm stationed at K-Bay with 3rd Radio Bn (only been here a week).

For your kilt, click on the USA Kilts link above. Kelly is about as trustworthy as you can get. Rocky on the other hand......

I also highly recommend USA Kilts. Their semi-traditional kilt is a full 8-yard kilt made of 11 ounce poly viscose. It comes in numerous tartans and is made to your measurements. Workmanship is first rate as is customer service:

Stillwater Kilts sells a heavyweight wool Black Watch kilt for only $159.00, and their standard kilt (which also comes in Black Watch) isn't bad for only $80.00. Both kilts only come in one length. Customer service is very good:

    I hope this helps.

    First Kilt

Thank you, gentleman, for all the help.... I opted for the Blackwatch semi-traditional kilt from USAK (also picked up a "Rob Roy" sporran). Again, thank you for the wisdom bestowed.

    John,

Two good choices. A poly viscose kilt is going to be a lot more comfortable (cooler) in Hawii than wool. PV is machine washable. Don't dry clean your pv kilt or use fabric softner as both will remove the telfon coating from the pv.

The Rob Roy sporran (by Buzz Kidder) comes with a chain sporran belt. We always recommend replacing a chain sporran belt with an all-leather sporran belt for every day use because chain will damage your kilt over time. Save the chain for evening and formal wear. Stillwater Kilts sells all-leather sporran belts.

Welcome---- and good choice to start. The all-leather sporran belt for every day is a must so as not to get the apron all fussed-up.

Done like a true Jarhead, Morath. Gather the info, make a decision, act upon it quickly. You made a good choice.

Billmcc summed it up nicely. About the sporran chain, first thing I noticed was that when you go to the head, you need to swing it out of the way and that chain wants to scrape and hook on everything. Get a belt.

BTW, You were born five years AFTER I was discharged from the Corps. Geez.
