I tie mine at the side, but many pipebands tie them at the front, in a band you simly tie them the way the pipe major says (without quibble)

this pic is the 'tying of the knot'... where oor twa family tartans are tied tagither roon oor wrists....

the sgains dhus arr oan the floor fraim the "this is a peaceful gatherin'- lay a' yur weapons oan the groon" part o' the ceremony....
