First time I wore the kilt I figured it was a good way to learn to not stand around with my hand in my pockets.
Glad you had a good first outing, the first time I flew kilted was also the first time I ever spoiled a drink (coke) im my lap. The coke simply ran down the apron to the floor, wiped the kilt (a denim UK) no problem.

Way to go Lux!
Ain't freedom great!??
When I'm not wearing a kilt with pockets, I use a vest with pockets, or a sporran.
One of the benefits of kilts is not messing my back muscles up by sitting on my thick wallet all day like I did when panted.
Only suggestion, if you're gonna go with an inexpensive kilt be sure and look at the USA casuals too.
But, you sound like one of those guys who'll soon be wearing a hand sewn traditional wool kilt.

Good story Lux, most of us have similar stories of angst the first day kilted! But you know, its never as bad as we think. And flying, or driving long distances, while kilted is pure bliss!

Welcome Home!
I still remember my first time out. I discovered that I had sweat glands in places that I never knew existed!

To Lex Mundi and Craig,
Welcome aboard the good ship X Marks! She has a few leaks, our rudder is a bit warped, and our sail is a tad tattered. But she's yar. You've joined a merry crew (of kilted pirates. ) Enjoy the voyage and Welcome!

Most men are probably a little nervous on that first kilt outing. I was. I went to a nearby convenient store wondering if people would start rolling on the floor laughing. The only thing that happened was that the girl behind the checkout counter said that she really liked my kilt.
Early on I found myself reaching for pockets, but that eventually passes, and the more you wear a kilt the more confident you will be.
SWK standards in acrylic are nice kilts for the money. Later on you may start jonesing for a wool one. So welcome, and enjoy the freedom and confort.

I still find myself looking for pockets. It's an old habit. It's not for the stuff that's in the sporran - it's just something that when I'm standing and talking to someone I never knew what to do with my hands so I stuck them in my pockets. You will always get looks and feel like you're getting looks but I don't get bad comments (except from my friends).

You WILL be wanded in airport security, and now I understand the "right foot in, left foot out" dance others have addressed. The plane ride was very comfortable, with very minimal creases in the pleats.
RIGHT!
Congrats!
Funny thing you mention the pockets. I've worn UK Mockers, then changed to a tartan kilt and sporran, and caught myself trying to find the pockets. People give funny looks when going for the wallet in my sporran at a checkout. Hey, gotta keep it somewhere!
I've worn a black AK numerous times through security, and haven't been wanded. Did remove the "sporran" that had all the metal stuff in it and put it on a tray; convenient for that.
