Okey...now just admit it...you must be related to Hamish!
I'm really beginning to think there's nothing quite like wool. nothing looks quite like it and nothing moves quite like it.

It seems to me that it would take slightly more cloth to pleat to the sett as opposed to the stripe, as you have to go over that little extra bit to continue with the pattern. Granted, it's only a matter of a couple feet, if that, spread over 20-30 pleats, but the excuse of pleating to the sett taking more cloth just doesn't hold up to mathmatical scrutiny.
Excellent kilt, too I'm quite jealous.

I'm happy to see one of our resident kilt makers get in on this topic. Thank you for speaking out, Matt...your expertise is always welcome in my book.
FYI, Matt made my Fitzsimmons 5-yard kilt (the very first of its kind, so its value is immeasureable) and pleated it to stripe without issue. Bear in mind that since there was less material, there's less pleating but that doesn't take away from the quality or the beauty of the kilt. The pleat-to-stripe looks fantastic on the kilt and I wouldn't have wanted it done any other way. GREAT job, Matt.

Phil is correct, the lining and the hanging loops are nicely done as well. I took a good look at the leather straps and buckles and compared them side-by-side to the ones Matt used on my recent Fitzsimmons kilt and I can see no difference between the buckles as they appear identical but there is a noticeable difference in the thickness of the leather straps used. Not to slight Edgar by any means but Matt wins hands down here and in my opinion, both sets of straps are very well-made and sturdy enough to last for many, many years to come. Here are a couple of pics (for an even closer look, click on the link in my signature and then click on "Kilt Pics" and then "County Cavan Kilt" to see larger close-ups):
The buckles (Edgar's County Cavan kilt is underneath the Matthew Newsome Fitzsimmons kilt):

The straps (Edgar's strap on top, Matt's strap on bottom):

Oh, and Phil, we can always style you the "American Hamish".
