Why do I wear a sporran...?
Because I can.

Martin, I suspect my sporran wearing habits are similar to yours: I seldom do so unless there are insufficient pockets in other garments I am wearing at the time.
Of course, I'll wear one when dressed formally, semi-formally or when tradition dictates, but I am sure I have never worn a sporran just to tell Joe Public that it IS a kilt that I am wearing! As for hiding bulges - what nonesense! We all have them so why hide them?!
Perhaps I am fortunate in that in general I have very little to carry around with me. I don't have a cell/mobile phone and all the bits and pieces that go with such things, nor do I carry tools/pocket knives. My camera is far too large to fit into any sporran I have yet seen, so that lives in my camera case. I don't smoke, so I have no need of all the paraphernalia that smokers carry, and my keys are usually located on a key-ring/clip attached to my belt.
More often than not, all that anyone will find in my sporran is a handerchief. At worst it might contain a small wallet and a coin-purse in addition to the aforementioned mouchoir!

I have my girlie sporran that I love, I can keep some cash, credit cards, id, and cell phone in it, no sweat.
I don't love wearing a traditional sporran- I guess I just feel weird with something dangling on me there... lol

To put my stuff somewhere. If I choose to put my stuff in a jacket, then I don't need it, but with California weather, that's not always feasible.
There's plenty of times that I swing it to the side when I walk (I walk at a fast pace ) and then leave it there, so apparently the bulge thing is not usually a worry of mine.

Hamish' general guidelines make good common sense and I have followed them for quite some time now. But for those folks that like the look, or gain a bit of confidence, or need the cargo space... go for it.

hot sporrans
I mentioned these else where (and I'm not connected to the sites): they have sporrans that could make you want to start wearing kilts just to wear one of their sporrans:
