Based what work I've seen Matt do, I'd say his are BETTER than 8 yarders for actual wearing.

As for "cheappo" kilts, I'd be careful. Stillwater and USA Kilts are actually pretty good. Sport Kilts are crap, unless they have SERIOUSLY improved recently. As for others, I'll let other posters give their opinions, as I have no experience or have not seen names and products connected. As a good rule of thumb, in kilts you (usually) get what you pay for.

As others have said, make sure to compare apples to apples. Matt's are great, but still in the $350 range.

Note that there's a significant difference between a four yard, and a five yard kilt in terms of the number of pleats, if it's knife-pleated. While this means something in heaveir weight wool, it REALLY means something in the lighter stuff.

Look at it this way. More pleats (up to about 30 or so) is better, yes? I mean, I'd rather have a kilt with 22 reasonably deep pleats than one with 16 reasonably deep pleats.

OK, if the sett of the kilt is 6 inches, then on the average (this is a generalization, OK?) a five yard kilt will have 6 more pleats than a four-yard will. That is a *significant* difference in appearrance. I have two four-yard poly-viscose kilts and I like them for knocking around and on hot days in the summer. But there's NO WAY they match up, even close, to my five-yard wool/poly blend kilt. The 5-yard is a MUCH nicer kilt.

Where in Ohio are you? If near Cincinnati, I could show you the difference between an 8 yard tank, 5 yard well made machine stitched and a 4 yard stillwater.

Otherwise here is a written comparison.
