Auld Alliance?
He does own homes in the Bahamas with his French born wife, an artist I think. Perhaps it's just a matter of finding a place they are both at home.
He was and is a huge supporter of Scottish independence and one of the founders (?) of Friends of Scotland, if I'm not mistaken.

who on earth would be willing to let go of the source of such a fine libation as single-malt highland scotch? There is a reason why it isn't out on it's own....England wants that scotch!

Many of us are living where we are now (North America, Australia, New Zealand, et al.) because our ancestors were involved with Scottish separatist movements.

I'm sure that Cajunscot can recommend some other material but for readability try:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/060...Fencoding=UTF8
(not plugging Amazon but it has become the easiest way to reference a book on the 'net.)
Stuff you may have never known and a pretty good overview of how we got there.
...and I've been trying to figure out a way to write something congratulatory about Mr. Connery but I just can't figure out a way to do his particular dialect as printed word!
"I suppose you expect me to talk?"
"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to accept a lifetime achievement award."

Sure, that was another major motivator. And when the landlords found out that sheep were more profitable than tenant farmers, they were "fired" and let go without even a handshake.
