    Andrew,

Actually, according to The Compendium of District Tartans by Matt Newsome and James Bullman, (Scotpress 2004, -05)((Which I highly recommend as a reference tool)) the Ayrshire District Tartan designed in 1988 is intended for those with connections to the districts of Kyle, Cunningham and Inverclyde.

It's also available through the Scottish Tartans Museum and in my opinion is a REALLY nice looking tartan.

You can see it at www.district-tartans.com

Yes, I agree that the Ayrshire tartan is rather nice, and also from some readings the Muir clan (one that has caused a lot of confusion on my part... one family name is Moir, which is listed as both a sept of Gordon, and as a variant of Muir...which is also listed as a sept of Gordon, and some consider it its own clan... and they also have a Chief now, which they didn't in the past...which was part of how they got absorbed into larger clans...see where the confusion comes from?) was located in that area as well, so it wouldn't be completely inappropriate, save for the spelling of Moir was more common in the Aberdeen area... However, Google Earth lists Greenock as Renfrewshire, and other maps list it as Inverclyde.... any thoughts? Yikes!

This map looks pretty authoritative and it shows that Greenock is most definitely in Inverclyde (Dunoon is in Argyll and Bute).

    Best regards,
