Yeah I would say it depended on the overall look of the sporran. I probably prefer three though.

I'd agree with P1M, Panache, Anderson and Robin on this; Either 3 or 0.
Two of my sporrans each have 3 tassles and my other one is a plain black leather sporran with no tassles.
Regional Director for Scotland for Clan Cunningham International, and a Scottish Armiger.

On a more serious note though, is there any significants to the number or is it just personal preferance on decoration? I never thougt about it before, but now I'd like to know.

The number of the tassles shall be three. No more, no less. Three shall be the number of the tassles, and the number of the tassles shall be three.
And I see that the sporran in the link Cavscout posted has 1...2...5!!!
