My company is an automotive supplier. I am pretty sure they put semi-formal for the dress code to keep the younger employees from showing up in baggy jeans and oversized t-shirts. I do think I would not be out of place without a jacket, but I want to dress as well as I can.

If a jacket isn't possible, think about a dress shirt, a tie and a nice pullover sweater.
