Ok. Mind you, I have NO clue as to what I am talking about.

For evening wear, I could see a tweed kilt and coat look being pulled off with brown leathers. Shoes, belt, sporran, straps, etc. Probably the hardware on the kilt in brass with leather. The tweed of course should be brown with little hints of darker colours, like greens or even dark burnt oranges.

Some people of course could pull this look off better than others... I think it would look dashing.

The only 'rule' is that you should wear the same color of leather parts. So, sporran, belt, shoes should all be of one color. As far as I know, black tends to be used at formal, evening events and brown for day events. But, . . . ?

My SWK weathered Lamont has black straps.
However, I wear brown belt and sporran and shoes with it anyway.

I've thought about replacing the straps, but it seems like too much trouble since I only wear the Lamont for casual events.

This would actually be my suggestion. I think the Lamont would look better with brown, but the black straps and brown belt/sporran have always thrown me (seems to violate the black/brown rule thing).

I intend to get a kilt in some tartan (don't have one in mind yet, though it may just end up being the SWK saffron) with brown straps, just so I can wear it with brown accessories.

It seems that the saffron is equally beautiful with black or brown as many Xmarkers are proving. I wonder if one can design a way of replacing straps on a daily basis depending on whim and accessories

Not to confuse the issue, but here I go anyway!
Black looks more formal, but a strong, solid brown kit looks more than casual. If your gear (sporran, strap, sgian dubh, boots, etc) are a more worn or distressed leather, they definitely don't look dressy.
So there you go, no black and white answer... only shades of brown!

Now there's a point ! I hadn't thought of that. Many of the older kilts you see have brown straps, but I think most modern ones have black (all mine do certainly). Mind you the only strap that would show would be the hip strap (the others being hidden by the belt) but it still might look a bit odd.
The Kilt is my delight !

Look as some of the pictures of Price Charles, he mixes black and brown frequently. He always looks well dressed in the kilt.

The only hard and fast rule would be to always wear black with formal or evening wear.

Thats a great picture M@A, for a long time the only sporran I had was a brown daywear sporran, however I have been able to "Dress it Up" when it was called for, nobody has ever told me that I was wrong for mixing things up, all I have ever received have been compliments on my kilt.
