Oh, and welcome from Snellville Georiga. "Where everybody's somebody"!
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I think at 5'8", Stillwater Kilts are going to be way too long for you. I would recommend USA Kilts casual. It's a tailored, custom fit garment, so you can measure it for wherever you want to wear it on the waist/hips. PLUS, there is a huge selection of tartans. Don't get me wrong, I have three SWKs myself. But, I just don't see them as a viable option in your case without the assistance of a tailor.

Thanks for all of the advice. Perhaps "low on the hips" was a bad phrase to use. I just didn't want the darn thing to look as though it was up to my armpits because of my height. I'm going to venture that I'll end up with a custom made kilt someday because I'm sure they'll be like everything else I try to buy off the rack. They will fit someplace, but not the other. I can't buy a shirt off the rack and get a good fit everywhere without having the arms too long and short tree stumps for legs with a 34" waist makes for a challenge in the trouser department also.
Again, thanks for the advice.

Being 6'4" I have the exact opposite problems as you, I would take a look at USA kilts in your case. Their casual model is around your price range, and it will fit since it is made to measure. With the new rush fee you will have it in no time. The multiple tartan selection allows you to pick on that is either universal, or that matches your team colors, or has a clan relation to you.
I have shortened stillwater kilts before so it can be done, but if I charged the people for my time, they probably could have bought a semi traditional from Rocky for the same price.
Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Rikk,
Welcome to the neighborhood.
You'll get a lot of preferences about how long a kilt should be. Somewhere in the forum is a thread with a survey asking that very question.
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...highlight=poll
My personal preference is that the kilt should stop at the top of the knee. When I kneel on the floor, my kilt does not touch the floor by about 1/2" or so.
Trying to figure out the measurements the first time is a bit confusing, but I believe the first step is to determine where you want the bottom of the kilt to be. (Top, Middle or Bottom of Knee). Then measure up from there to the place where you will want your belt to be (Below, On or Above your Navel). from there you just measure your circumference at that point and then measure the widest part of your hind end and you've got it.
Your description of the style of kilt you want is not totally clear since there are contemporary low waisted kilts in tartan and solids. Do you have a color or tartan in mind.
USA kilts and Freedom kilts are both top picks to look into. Great prices and great quality and service.
Stillwater is another good choice for a starter kilt.
Once you determine your sizes, post back your measurements. THer may be some good used kilts members are wanting to off-load in preperations for their next one. (ie. my USA Kilts Casual Gordon Modern, 38" waist and about a 22" length, 43" hips)

Hey, and welcome. I am a modern kilt wearer, I don't like the traditional fit of kilts. I just can't stand anything above my hips that should be below. That said, as well as utilikilt, check out neokilt. all good stuff.
Nice chioce in hobbies, I shared many of the same. Thats why I am such a young "old man".

I've looked at some of the suggested websites and some of the kilts they offer are incredible. I've been to many of them before, but never looked seriously. I can't believe the prices, but that's only becuase I am unfamiliar with them. Does anyone want to buy a slighly used kidney? I'd offer the liver, but it's probably pickled long ago.
