I tried the standard wooden clamp but for some of the heavier kilt (eg., SWK Wool Ancient Lamont) I felt like the small clamp wasn't quite wide enough to keep the kilt from being pulled down on the outside edges. The solution was easy and relatively inexpensive. SWK sells a larger sized clamp type that supports almost the entire width of the kilt (stored as described above - as if it is being worn). I only ordered three but I am going to get some more. I find the UK is heavy enough to slip off the hangers with the two clips (it needs a clamp style).

Here's the LINK. I know they are $6.50 (+ shipping) but you paid a lot for that kilt, why not invest in a stury hanger for it too (especially the heavy wool ones)?

Agree with the cedar lined closet. I lined mine with cedar chip board from the Home Depot (about $20 per 4X8 foot sheet). Every Spring and Fall (when I change the clocks for day light saving), I take the clothes out, put them on the bed and run a sandpaper over the surface to reactivate the cedar-y smell. Was a great and easy solution to an expensive cedar closet.

I hang my wool one(s) in a garment bag in the closet on a 4 clip hanger. I have a few cedar balls in the bottom of the bag to keep the moths away. The PV ones I also hang. but I fold them differently.

Lavender sounds like a good idea as well. One question though. Doesn't lavender attract scorpions? If so, I wouldn;t suggest it fotr people where this could be an issue

With regard to strong wooden clamp hangers, check out http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...hlight=setwell. you can buy the same product for about $2.50 plus shipping that SWK sells for $6.50 plus shipping.

I use the strong, extra long wooden clamp hangers from Setco. My 9 yard 16 oz must be clamped to the kilt and hung up much in the same manner it is worn. My 8 yard, 13 oz kilt is hung using the double fold over method Matt describes. It is amazing how much heavier and thicker the 16 oz kilt is than the 13 oz.

They are hung in the closet in nylon or a similar type fabric garment bags with the side zipper on them. I don't use cedar or anything to keep the moths out of them, maybe I should.

Some good stuff on this thread, thanks.

I use heavy plastic WalMart hangers. I think they come with three clips on them. I buy bags of the extra clips and add two so that each hanger had five clips. I hang the kilts from the five clips.

My wool kilts are in WalMart garment bags which seem to be made mostly of plastic except for one side which is a mesh material allowing air to circulate but keep moths out. I keep the matching flashes in a zip lock bag tossed into the bottom of each kilt's garment bag. I put a large index card in the zip lock bag to help keep the flashes straight.

My wool kilts are hung in the closet with the door closed.

My PV and cotton kilts hang from the same hangers. Just living in an apartment I had to buy two WalMart garment racks to hang them from. They're out in the light and air.

Guess I should move the wool kilts out and put the cotton kilts in the closet.

I finally gave up on finding a hanger for my two leather kilts. I built my own from a 2x2 cut to length. Then I added cup hooks where the belt loops on the kilt are and hang the leather kilt from the cup hooks by the belt loops. I added a top hook, like you buy for storing things in your garage, to hang it all from. Works for me.

Hmm, for me that one is easy:

I use the loops supplied to hang on a hanger (as women do with skirts). Kilt buckled

Have also successfully hung kilts by simply hanging loops over a clothes peg (unbuckled)

Hmm, why not use the loops for what they are intended for...

Eh, of course I am talking about the loops inside the waist line, and not the loops to thread the sporran strap through (!)

    Hi Patrick,

I have found that what you do is fine for short-term storage but, if left for weeks, months or even years hanging from those 'ribbon' loops, with the waistband sagging, your kilt's pleats will twist and become seriously mishapen! As I understand it, those loops were originally supplied to military kilts so that, when it was folded in a certain way, the loops came together and the kilt could be hung by them from a single wall-hook. Again this is probably alright if the kilt is hanging like that just overnight, and is taken down to be worn each day! I would not subject my kilts to that 'torture' however!
