This won't be my first kilt. I've got both 8 yarders and a box pleat already so it won't be a matter of filling in a gap in the kollection.

I laid out the fabric last night and did a quick box pleat to the red strip. It looked outstanding! Right now my inclination is to ship the lot to Matt for two kilts. I've already have plans for my XMarks tartan to be done into a tank to the sett so another box pleat wouldn't be a bad thing (is another box pleat ever a bad thing? )

    Harlan,

I think regimental weight cloth makes for an excellent 4 yard box pleated kilt. The regimental weight really pleats up nicely, but it sure is heavy. Making a 4 yard kilt gives the kilt more year-round wearability, as you said.

With the MacKenzie tartan, that would normally be pleated to the white line. If you really are determined to have it pleated to the red, that might be possible depending on just how large the sett is -- and you'd end up with some very wide pleats. How big is the sett repeat (distance from one red line to the other)?

    Hey Matt,

Thanks for chiming in. The sett is 11". I don't know all the calculations needed but would the pleat width then be 2.75"?

I think I screwed that up. Pleat width = just over 3.6"?

Hmm... sett size is smaller than what I would have thought. In a 4 yard box pleated kilt, if you pleat to the red line, your pleats would be about 3.5" wide, give or take, which actually would not be bad.

If you pleat to the white line, the box pleats would be between 1.75 and 2" (should come out to about the width of the green portion of the tartan). This is how I would normally pleat this tartan, but actually given this sett size, I'd say those pleats would be a bit too small.

My thoughts on this are.....why settle for one kilt when you can have two? Two kilts means twice the fun...

....or in this case fun for twice as many people.
