I was at the Flying Saucer on one our kilt nights and was sporting my over the top USMC sporran. I had to go to the head. 4 young men entered and were standing behind me laughing and making remarks, while I was at the urinal. I turned around and they got a good look at all the EAG's and could not get out of the head fast enough. Not only that, but they left the bar as well. Appearantly afraid that I would go Chesty Puller on them. It was REALLY funny. When ever I wear it I get comments like SEMPER FI! and OOH-RAH! It's too bad that I never made it past the induction center.

My brother was the same way. He had knee problems, and was asked to go after a few days in boot.

I've noticed that hoodies often cross the road when I'm walking down it. Strange that. I've put it down to either the reputation generated by Scots football fans, or to some atavistic memory of Scots wandering around northern and central England in older (and happier?) days

Yep, it's happened to me more often than not. Being 50 & quite grey, I'm flattered but somewhat confused by it. At a club for a friend's birthday a young guy in the heads said to me that "You must be the maddest guy in here". Probably the most unexplainable one was a member of an outlaw motorcycle club that I was emailing about a reptile transaction made the comment (after exchanging identifying photos) that he wouldn't like to tangle with me. Go figure! I tell the wife (with tongue in cheek!) that it's because they identify the Gordon tartan, but I seriously think it's the reputation that Scotsmen have for drinking & brawling. The tattooed face probably contributes a bit though

I think MANY of us have gotten the "You look like you can handle yourself" or "I wouldn't mess with you" kind of comment.
One person elaborated on it to me once in a pub...
"To wear a kilt, you either have to be crazy or REALLY know how to defend yourself. Either way, I'm not going to mess with you." I took it as a compliment and smiled and he bought me a beer to make sure I was in a good mood.

I've seen Kiltman in several of his kilts - and yes he looks like he could handle just about anything thrown at him.

Of course by wearing the Kilt with confidence adds to the look of don't mess with them. Thanks for sharing.

After our last kilt night, as I was walking out of a pub with my wife, we passed two young males who were smoking outside. I heard one start to say, "Hey! Look at..!" He was promptly quieted by his friend, who either knew the reputation of men in kilts, or saw the group of men in kilts just inside the pub window. I could only chuckle to myself as I walked away.
