Look at it this way. Now you have a gift for his birthday. I'm sure he'd like a nice pair of trousers.

It could be worse. For my birthday one year, I was given plastic pink flamingos.

Sounds like something my mother would do. Only with Knives not Pants.
I collect knives, good knives, rare knives, things that I find interesting. I think the last 8 gift giving occasions, birthday, xmas, etc. I've gotten some cheap-o made chinese/korean/pakistani order out of a "gift" catalog type knife. I almost want to hand them back to her, but I'm nice. They end up being regifted to Boy Scouts making Eagle or the like.
You can try what I tell my mom......"why don't you get it, no more ______"
insert trousers for your case. Hope they get the hint.

I love pink flamingos. What a thoughtful and considerate gift.
Imagine tartan flamingos.

Yep, or you could always give him the gift of soap... delivered repeatedly and with great vigor from within a boot sock. (And I thought all my "blanket party" leanings had long since been purged from my brain housing group...)
JUST KIDDING! Kids, don't try this at home!

I think the idea of giving him a kilt for his birthday is brilliant. It's a civilized way of getting the message across, and if you give him a Stillwater or SportKilt, it needn't even be that expensive.
And who knows... he might actually try it on.

He does have a cheap kilt that he got from some ebay seller, nothing like the kilts I own, but he may get another one soon, you are right probably a Stillwater, USA Casual, or something like that, just to make a point.

Any chance that you have a flagpole in your front yard?
Perhaps you should "run them up the flagpole and see who salutes".
