It's actually an Ancient Campbell of Argyll, George.

I married a Campbell (on her mom's side). Her mom is into the family geneology bit and she'd traced their lineage back to the Campbells of Argyll, so I adopted their tartan.

I believe the Ancient Campbell of Argyll is NOT approved by the current head of the clan, but... I've never really been one to follow rules that well.

(On a side note... it's very interesting to go to tartan festivals and games and see the Campbells still get boo'd by the MacDonalds. And I thought my brother held grudges!)

We Lamont's don't hold grudges, If you examine the records the Lamont's were not totally innocent themselves. I have no idea how the Campbell's sheep ended up on Lamont land??? (wink wink) That stuff was 350 yrs ago,
I personally an flattered that the Campbell's copied the Lamont ancient tartan, don't let any of the experts on here tell you that the Campbell's were first.

By the way... funny you should mention the Lamonts. I believe our piper (also named George) said he was a Lamont. The whole day ended up being a bit of a blur and I'm not patient enough to try and count plaid stripes to see, but... I'm 90% positive that's what he said. What do you think?



They are so similar everyone kept asking us if we were in the same clan. Interesting to think we should have been scrapping the whole time. I'm sure the women at the wedding would have loved to see that...

From the picture they look identical, I can't even tell you the differences between the two tartans. Most of the Campbell tartans that I have seen have been the dark Black Watch looking versions. I like the Ancient Lamont and now your Ancient Campbell vs the darker versions of both.

The piper's tartan looks like the Russell/Galbraith/Mitchell/Hunter tartan.

I really liked the lighter, more muted colors in the ancient tartan, as well.

There are some subtle differences between the two. George's tartan has the white stripe going through the blue background while the ACA tartan has it going through the green. His tartan also has a bit more red in it.

Alright... now I'm forced to email George the Piper and verify what tartan he wears.

Campbell of Argyll doesn't have any red in it; Campbell of Cawdor (Argyll district) does, though.

Sorry... my intended inflection didn't come across clearly in the text.

George's has some thin pin stripes of red in it and mine has none, so his has "a bit" more.
