I've come to the conclusion that I like what boots express when worn with a kilt. That's when the individual comes out instead of the copier. And it's so easy to make a mistake when copying. It's yours when it comes out your way.

Pics from my daughters wedding. On the left the groom is wearing what looks like clunky motocross boots with spikes, and a black utilikilt, the best man is wearing mid calf boots with knee high socks. Somehow this worked and kept it formal.

    Grandson looks cute, doesn't he?

I have a pair of medieval moccasins that I wear every day. No matter what I wear, kilt or anything else. I wear the ankle height ones, I don't personally like the full boot height in this shoe.

I have seen the sodhoppers and really want some but I'm having a hard time justifying the price. He is the cheapest for this type boot I have found but they are still a bit pricey for me. They look great with a kilt! (I was going to recommend them but JRB beat me to it)

Speaking of medieval moccasins, Medieval Moccasins offers a ghillie style knee high moccasin in black that I think looks good with a kilt (I'm not too down with the back scabbard, though). I own a pair of their low top medieval moccasins in brown that I wear with my belted plaid. They have thin modern soles but are otherwise pretty good historical kit.

    maybe these would do?

I'm not sure if these match what you had in mind, but for the price, they seem like a fair deal:

I've got a pair of those that I wear with my kilt and they are quite comfy, I also wear either black combat boots or my High-Tech's.

What do you guys think of riding boots? I'm thinking of full leather dress or field English riding boots. I've always loved those for some reason and I can only assume that something that goes that far up the leg has got to offer amazing ankle support. But would it look funny?

That's my worry too. I tend towards a more conservative style of dress, so I stick mostly to traditional tartan kilts, hose & flashes, etc. Even when I'm wearing my black UK, I just don't like the way I look with my old lace-up firefighter's uniform boots on. It's more of a cutting edge and tough look. I see myself wearing those (especially my heavy, fire-resistant boots) and I look like I'm spoiling for a fight (at least to my eyes). Problem is that those boots provide the best support for my bad lower leg. I just don't get that kind of support with my ghillies or other low-toped dress shoes that go well with the rest of my clothing style.

I thinking of the dress riding boots just because they are great support (actually going even higher on the leg) and are dressier than my other boots.

I'm just so worried about spending that much money on a pair of boots only to find that I don't like the way I look.

Maybe foxhunting boots instead. They have a neat "cuff" on top.

You wouldn't believe how much those darn things cost!

It would look odd to my eye. But as I've said in other places, this is clothing, not a costume, or a uniform. If you're comfortable with how it looks, do it, and the rest of us can giggle behind our hands.
