Have you seen the number of septs of the clan Buchanan? Chances are everyone is related to a Buchanan somehow Go for it.

"Tartans
There are no strict rules on who has the right to wear a particular tartan. People normally wear only the tartan (if any) of their surname, or a "district tartan" connected with where they live or where their family come from.
Wearing a particular clan tartan indicates that the wearer bears an allegiance to the chief of that clan. A tartan which uses the name of a clan may only do so if the chief of that clan has given his approval to the particular design."
See Lord Lyon's website: http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/l...=Content.show&
So, there are indeed rules on who should wear which tartan, even though many would like to believe otherwise.

I get the feeling I'll be black/white balled for this. So go ahead and slam dunk me. I happen to be the recipient of an American military decoration. Is there a law that stipulates you may not wear it if you desire to do so? I have to say it is a very pretty medal, one that a lot of people might like to wear because of it's bright color and it's shine. Does that mean everyone one should wear it for reasons of color or style? For some this argument may seem like a stretch, for me it is not.
I can already see the ground swell - a tartan is not a decoration! I differ - wearing it is a stipulation of alliegance. I don't know of any higher allegiance in a matter. I say as long as there are tartan kilts that you can wear that are universal - find the universal with the color you like best and wear it. Don't step on another's tradition or allegiance to their clan - unless of course you believe you have the right to do so.
There I've said it, so go ahead and let me have it - with both barrels.

I wear Macleod of Lewis (i.e. Loud Macleod), the only tartan that really gives Buchanan a run for its money. Although I do have clan affiliation, I would likely wear this tartan even if I didn't, because I feel it matches my loud personality! I would resent anyone that thought I had no right to wear it, but, that said, I think it is a good idea to have some vague idea of the clan you are unofficially "joining" when you wear their tartan. Technically, all you had to do to join a clan was to swear allegiance to the clan Chief (or marry into it!), so swear allegiance if that makes everyone feel better.
Be well,
