I have an older kilt and they were made to come right up to your rib cage in those days. If it is still too long like that you will have to get it shortened so it sits mid-knee but make sure you don't stoop when checking - it drops the hem even more. Please don't get it hemmed or the selvedge cut off though. The only proper way is to unpick the top and shorten from there. That is a virtual re-make and will cost but worth it for a good quality garment at the end of the day.

I agree with Phil. Having an expert unpick the top is the only way to shorten a kilt. My Kiltmaker in Scotland told me that. But try wearing it right under your rib cage first. If you are about 6' that should do the trick.
Good Luck
