So is high-speed internet available in this littel town, or will it be dial-up? A minor consideration against a major stree-reduction, but worth asking.

It does sound like a good deal, and from what I've gathered you seem like you would enjoy the change, and the new challenges. As long as the family is in agreement, I'd say give it a go.

Of course no one here can make the decision for you, but it sounds like you've just about made the decision anyway. The hard part is actually saying, "Okay, let's do it."

My house is very similar to the ones in the pictures, especially the first one. Mine was built in 1914. It's now in a Historic Protected area, which doesn't affect my house except some rules for the front.
Most of my friends have opted for newer homes and have to suffer through the growing pains and lower quality. The older houses have usually adjusted, the trees have grown and previous owners have usually done sensible things somewhere along the line.
Check for a I-beam in the basement for a centre bearing support. If it's there, great. If not, get an estimate on doing it. That's usually your biggest surprise expense in an old house like those two.
Always remember, you're really working for your time off. If this gives you more time and close enough income, that's the equation.
How far off the main highway is it?

What town is it in Al? A fair amount of my family came from Holland, MB and Treeherne, MB. and I still have a bunch near Selkirk, Petersfield area.
It sounds like you already have the right decision made. Sometimes it's not about the risks you take, but the risks you didn't take. I am sure you and Karen will make the best decision for the both of you.

Al,
Would you rather regret the things you did or the things you didn't do? It sounds like you have your ducks lined up. I say don't look back and don't let the door hit you in the pleats ![Wink](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I've made 6 civilian moves in my life (mostly for education) and have enjoyed everywhere I've ever been. I grew up in a small town and can only exist in a city for about a week or until I've seen all the museums. Having never moved with money to spare I could only dream about how great it would be. I've noticed a lot of city mice move to the country and return to the city to do things they miss. As long as you can do that you should be good. In regard to your fall back plan, don't even consider failure in your new venture and you won't need it. O'Neille
