AKG well done! each of us that works kilted brings the rest that much closer.

Ayin - if your circumstances permit, and you want to open a new frontier, wear the kilt to work. If they do anything in response you don't much approve of - call the ACLU.

When you talk to the ACLU DON'T SAY KILT OR HERITAGE. Tell them you are a man who wears skirts because that is who you are and your employer is discriminating against you because of it. (true statement after all, all kilts are skirts, all skirts are not kilts).

When I was challenged by management for kilting at work, I told them the above was my retirement plan. I get so much management support for my wardrobe you wouldn't believe it.

Now my situation is different from most. I don't have much of a job to lose. I have no mortgage. I work so I can drive a car (to work mostly?) and have little extras. My wife is a state employee with great benefits. I was prepared to be canned.

I was also prepared to go to the ACLU and cry about being a persecuted man in a skirt.

If the ACLU discriminates between kilties and cross-dressers, well they will have just defecated in their own nesting location.

But back to our man in ALaska! For so many men (women in kilts just don't draw the same attention in my experience) they would be accepted in the workplace. You need the courage to ask and the courage to do it.

Well, thanks for all the support, encouragement, and kudos everyone! Being kilted at work yesterday was a great experience. A couple of the kids we work with were not sure about it and laughed, snickered, or make "nice dress/skirt" comments, but I just thanked them and answered any questions they had. Also, I am the Trainer for our organization, and had a CPR class yesterday afternoon. One of the folks in my class asked when he first saw if I had a sexual-identity issue (he was joking, we always joke about stuff like that in the behavioral/mental health world) and I just answered that as a matter of fact I did, I was feeling twice as manly as the rest of the men in the room... which got alot of laughs, not to mention a little twinkle in the eye of the women in the room.

More seriously though, I agree that thouse of us that are fortunate enough to go to work kilted should. Those of us that are not "allowed" to wear the kilt to work should try to find an angle to push. You can go subtle by just putting up a pic of yourself kilted in your personal workspace, or extreme by threatening ACLU action as Perldog007 has suggested. Eventually I think the tide will turn (women wear pants to work every day don't they?)

Anywho.... back to the salt mines......

Bravo!! I loved your response to the fellow in the CPR class. Well done!

When my wife and I open our new business together once we make the move to Manitoba next year, kilts will be a main part of my wardrobe. I have no idea how the locals will react, but we'll see when the time comes.

Thank you for the input. I had never thought of taking the stance of "I'm just a man in skirt".

I agree though that I probably won't pick this fight with my work though, unless i'm ready to be canned. Which I, like most people, can't afford to have happen. Should the day come though. My arsenal is now a bit more full thanks to the suggestions.

That's awesome! I will SO have to remember that one!

I'm going to be teaching first aid soon and have been wondering if the comapny I'd be working for would let me get away with being kilted.

I'll be sure to post and let everyone know how it goes!
