    James,

"Plaid" means roughly "blanket." The belted plaid
is a large blanket like wrap worn with a belt. Also
    known as a "great kilt."

The kilt is not cumbersome if it fitts you and is well made!
With a normal kilt, this is true. However, the belted plaid is a piece of double-width tartan cloth that you have to hand pleat and belt around your waist every time you wear it. That sounds cumbersome for everyday wear.

So you are saying that you only wear the kilt once or twice a year? - No, no - you can't be saying that!
A belted plaid is not a kilt, such as one you would hang in your closet. If belted plaids were all that was available, I wouldn't wear one every day, either.

Maybe I mis-understood - Are you calling the great kilt the "belted plaid" ?????

In that case, disregard my remarks.

That's true, BUT if you did it every day, you would soon become more efficient. After all, the highlanders did it.

The belted plaid and the "great kilt" are the same thing.

Awricht Robinhood, Practice and Persist pleating and wrapping. It is trial and error i,m afraid. When ye hae pleated it and left yer two aprons either side, after a few attempts if it still doesnae look right, afore ye lose the heid git yersel wrapped in, fasten belt and ye will be amazed of how much ye can adjust it when it is on.-DO NOT COMPARE IT TO THE MODERN KILT AS YE WILL NEVER BE HAPPY!! A four yard plaid is far easier tae wrap and just as smart, the 6 yard plaid is for wrapping roon yersel.
If ye want tae go the whole nine yards take a look at how the jacobites looked.
I hae a weathered tartan, nice muted clours, i hae worn a long haired sporran wi the plaid, most o the time nae sporran. I hae seen many lads wearing the plaid here but most wear the modern kilt as they believe it is less hasstle and mare practical but still believe the plaid is very smart.

Ps Keep yer belt ticht as there is nothing else keeping it up, I wis in Glencoe last week and my belt buckled popped, doon went the plaid, and a few laughs "Naw at ma manhood ye understand"
Guid luck, guid move and let me ken how ye git oan

I have a belted plaid and I have only worn it to renaissance faires so far. However, I have seen pictures of someone I know wearing his belted plaid to a Burns night supper and he looked great. He wore it with modern full dress accessories (Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat, bow tie, tartan hose, brogues). After seeing those pictures I definitely would consider wearing my belted plaid to any very formal occassion where one might wear a fly plaid.
