I only wear fur w/ a jacket or at the very least a dress shirt and tie when it's too warm for a jacket. Casual/day sporran always w/ my t-shirts and rugby shirts. My A Hay dragon works very well at being a little dressier for evening casual.

Other evening rules no one observes:

• A lady should not wear leather shoes in the evening, but only those which might be ruined if she were to step in a puddle, lest she appear to be too poor to afford to ruin her shoes (or that she might be required to step in a puddle).
• Watches should not be worn for evening social events, lest you telegraph the notion that you'd rather be somewhere else.

Or so says Miss Manners (or Emily Post, I forget which).

Since we ignore these rules with impunity, I'm sure no one will chastize you for your faux pas either.

Absolutely! Even under the old "rules" the day sporran would be worn in the evening as long as you weren't in evening (i.e. formal) wear. Check out the ball scene in the movie "Tunes of Glory" (~1961); most of the civilians are wearing fine tweed jackets and what we would call day sporrans at an evening event that was not a formal event. Today, I'd agree with what everyone else has said.
