It could be an interesting outfit, however I would like to see pictures of it all together before saying anything.

Very good point James. it's easy to forget all blacks are NOT the same. I think in general the charcoal jackets are much easier with black shirts.

If that is the case then I would stick with the PC and white shirt, cream hose and white sporran your other choice doesn't sound quite right for black tie.. If the dress is semi-formal then give it a go. I think a semi-dress sporran would be a better choice than a formal one and i am not sure about the hose, I would probably need to see it. black hose might be a bit to much but who knows.
What Chef said. How will the other men there dress? Will they wear white or black shirts?

If you're going to wear a black shirt I wouldn't recommend the cream hose. With them being so much lighter than the rest of the ensemble they'd stand out and become a focal point. I think black hose with either Wallace tartan or red flashes would be the best option.

Also, like the others have mentioned, make sure the various blacks look ok together. For instance, I don't think a black jacket, which sorta has a matte finish, would look good with a black shirt that is made of a shiny material. A coloured vest/waistcoat my work to split up the blacks and prevent any clashing.

Might be better to go with a mock turtle neck?

I like what you describe and like Fluter's look, too.

This would be my guiding rule: it's an office party, so it's business. What makes sense for business?

I know--freedom, throw off the chains of opression, rage against the machine, and all that--but it's business, pure and simple if it's an office party. You may not work there, but your wife does, and it can have an effect on her carreer, so I would make my decision based on that.

If it's black tie, wear the charlie. If it's suits and sport coats (which I suspect it is), wear the argyl with any shirt and tie you want. You'll still be the best dressed guy in the joint!

P.S. what McMurdo said. We need pix in order to comment on the outfit.

    (Besides, we like pix.)

Still up in the air on what I'll be wearing. It's to late to get the black hose as the party is tommrow. Due to the fact I don't ever wear a suit I don't own a black dress shirt. I'll pick up a shirt on the way home tonight and let the Wife make the decision.

The all black look sounds good though. May be a black set of hose for Christmas?
