If you enjoy off-beat and bizarre, check out Michael Slade. That is his nom de plume. He is actually a criminal defense attorney from Vancouver.
Shawshank is a favourite Stephen king movie of mine along with Carrie (for the performances alone) the cinematography wasn't that good. I understand King hated the movie adaptation of The Shining.
What's the best Stephen King Movie. Or is that a different thread?

Thanks for posting this thread. I'm a fan of King's earlier work but haven't thought about him in quite a while. Just checked and have nine of his books. Guess I'll have to start some re-reading.
IT still gives me the creeps.

I knew there were others. And I also knew his ramblings would come up. the thing is, I can babble if I let myself. So, I can appreciate his effort for character development (even though I admit it's a bit much at times: I like it that way). I honestly haven't seen a movie adaptation I liked (Carrie was decent, but I've actually never read the book ). The worst I've seen was Hearts in Atlantis. I adored the book but the movie was a dissapointment to say the least. Oh and I love the Richard Bachman books too. Oh man, The Long Walk and Running Man were amazing.
Top ten favorites in no order of preference:
-The Regulators
-Desperation (saw you mentioned Regulators, but not this one Panache. I'm not sure which I love more. One was as King one as Bachman. But without checking I can't be sure which was which)
-Hearts in Atlantis
-The Long Walk
-Bag of Bones
-From a Buick 8
-Nightmares and Dreamscapes
-The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
-Lisey's Story
-Gerald's Game (it was the 1st I read. It's what hooked me.)

I'm a huge fan. If you're going to read the DT series pick up a copy of the Concordance and be sure to read all of the other books and stories associated with the series. Some are more relevant than others. If you ever have questions PM me. I've read everything but On Writing and that's in my to be read pile.

Love SK!!! Favorite is The Stand! Also like Tommyknockers, Dreamcather, It and The Regulators. And I enjoyed the Dark Tower series...
Also read Dean Koontz. Similar style.

Yeah, everyone tells me to read Dean Koontz. My mom likes him a lot too. But, I've read a couple of his and never really got into him. I may give him another shot sometime though...

The thing I like best about Stephen King is the character development. It is indeed distressing when he kills them, but that's the point, isn't it?
I like Dean R. Koontz as well. Have you read Oddkins? It's a children's book! Twisted man.

Like husband, like wife, I hate to have to agree with the following individual...

I LOVE Shawshank, both the movie and the book.
Has anyone seen Apt Pupil? I really liked the story...maybe liked is a bad way to put it...but I haven't seen the movie.
Be well,

Count me as a Steven King fan. But I too prefer Koontz. I love the dogs in his books, such as in "Watchers". I'm currently re-reading "Fear Nothing" I really like "Snowman" as a character. As for King, no one has yet mentioned, "It". I loved the book, but not the movie.

I like King, although I think he is a better short story writer than novelist. My faves would probably be: (in no particular order)
The Shining
Bag of Bones
The Long Walk
'Salem's Lot
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Night Shift
Skeleton Crew
Everything's Eventual
Other writers I would suggest in the genre:
Kim Newman
Richard Matheson
F. Paul Wilson
H.P. Lovecraft
Dan Simmons (Summer of Night is very much like Stephen King, if King were better at writing novels) ;)

I read "The Mist" when it come out in a collection of short stories, the name of which I forget (it had a toy monkey on the cover). That was the one story in the book which terrified, and, boy, did it ever!!!
"IT" has been mentioned. I too liked the book as opposed to the tv movie version which came out. I was terrified right up to the very end. Boy, talk about a disappointing conclusion!
