A good and funny answer!
On our last kilt night some guy asked me why I was wearing a kilt and I simply said..."it's saturday".
I could see his mind racing to figure that one out. LOL
OK, I am a bit of a smart aleck but it's humourous and non-offensive. And if they think about it carefully they'll realize that what I'm saying is 'any day can be a kilt day.'

Two good responses, just like, "The sun is shining."
"Lads, we're outnumbered, surrounded, and will all likely die tomorrow, but I have good news!"
"I just found a bunch of whiskey in the castle cellar!"

Guess that would work for motorcycle horses too.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I always enjoy a simple: "Because cops frown on public nudity."
When facing crude, idiot college guys it's usually: "Because they don't make three legged pants."
When someone is implying it's feminine: "I saw it in my mom's closet and it just looked so comfortable"
When asked if there's an event: "Kiltfest January 1st - December 31st"
Take it however you want: "You ever see that movie Highlander? It's just like that."
For the moral highground: "It's about freedom... Hey, get your mind out of the gutter!"
Also fun: "It's to protest [insert bad thing here]." (for extra credit/screwing with friends, expand into a full on scene causing, loud, embarrassing, fake rant. Not particularly kilt oriented, but fun)

I like to respond with, "Why pants?"
They usually have to think about it for a while. Then they are forced to admit that they wear pants to cover their nakedness...
A kilt accomplishes that goal just as well. Sometimes better, considering the way young men wear their pants sagging down around their butts...
Wow, that made me sound like an old man... Some of those "young men" are my age!

"Why not?"
That's usually my first response. Hard to come up with a real good valid answer to that.
