How on Earth do they do it?? Given the cost of 16 oz. tartan, I wonder how are they are able to sell a full 8 yard kilt tailored in Scotland by hand for only $360??
Even if they could get double width fabric for $25/yard (well less than half what I pay wholesale for tartan at the current exchange rate) and the fact that the company must have to pay at least some import duties, I would think that they can't possibly be paying the kiltmaker much or that some corners are cut somewhere if the company is going to make any money selling it at $360.
If you look at Tartantown, Burnett's and Struth, and the British Shop (all of whom supply high quality band kilts), their 8 yard, 16-oz hand sewns range from $600 to over $900.
