Riverkilt, my wife is a L.P.C. as you are and works at an in-patient rehab place. I keep waiting for her to come home with the story that someone asked her, "what's with your husband in the kilt?" I'll post her answer when it happens.

BTW, you and my wife are in an important profession but not well understood and certainly not always appreciated. Keep up the good work.

I've always gotten more positive responses to the kilt than negative. As a matter of fact, I haven't ever gotten a negative, except for some mild teasing from my boss and a female colleague, who refuses to call it anything but a skirt. If I get irritated, I can always hint at insensitivity to cultural diversity. The best response I get is from the African Americans in my department. I always suggest that the men get their dyshikis and kufis. I suppose I am due for some criticism, although statistics don't really work that way. Like Alaskan Kilted Guy, I like being identified as "The guy who wears the kilt."

I like that. Can I come too? We could all trickle in with similar problems. Maybe once a month. I have a problem. See I wear a kilt and coordinating all the necessary accessories leaves me with less time to spend with my family and so... I need to talk to someone who will understand my problem"

I really do think the kilt helps folks get perspective outside of our isolated enclave.....unless they're rule-bound prisoners of the local comformist culture...and the intake staff know better than to place those kind of clients with me.

No one comes to my agency for the first time when they're having a good day. The majority are toting court referral paperwork with them. I think the kilt helps take the edge of the shame some of them feel about coming in...help them relax....not all...but most. It don't take a genius to look at a kilted guy and figure out he's probably not gonna be wagging his finger at them.

However they may feel, I certainly feel better and more comfy kilted, which helps me do a better job. And tell you what, as someone commented above...you wouldn't believe what turns up in our lobby...sometimes I can't believe it myself...in this little isolated rural town...never a dull day.

People come in being expected to share their life stories, their deepest darkest secrets, and all the bad things they've ever done. As counselors we expect our clients to share these things with us, someone they've just met. I think letting some of our identity shine through helps our clients to see that we're human, we're not just some dsm junkie in a suit waiting to put them on meds or imprison them in some care plan.

Yeah, I'm known locally as "the kilted guy" too.
I do not understand why, but I also get ALOT of support from black women. They have better knowledge of kilts than many other people.
