As I remember the chain is for more evening or formal wear, while the leather is more of a daywear style. That also seems to go for the sporran its self; leather for casual and the fur for more dress up. Knowing I'm going to more pub nights than Burns nights I went with the leather styles. I've also hear that the chain can begin to wear the fabric at some point. Then again wear what you like and what works for you.

Personally, I've found that the braided sporran belt from Rkilts will compliment the fanciest formal sporran, while ultimately being much kinder to your kilt than ch-ch-chains.

I actually dismantled the chain from my chain-type sporran belt and made some chain "hangers". I think it doesn't look too bad...I could never get the sporran belt to ride right. Maybe it's my shape...I dunno...but the chain hangers work splendidly. Perhaps you can check 'em out Saturday!

As something of a "gentleman of substance" (read: chubby), I find that my sporran hangers from CavScout are my favorite means of supporting my sporran.

Which reminds me that I ran into RiverKilt at the Games yesterday, and highly admired his Stillwater leather sporran. I'm going to have to get one of those, when Jerry gets 'em back in stock....
