Here's a skunk sporran, that I just completed so that I can wear it tonight. I took apart a cheapo sporran, sanded and painted the cantle and then sewed the skin on front. I also made some dingleberries for it, but it looks too busy with them and I like it better just plain.
Is there a reason for those two or three tassel's on the front of most sporran's or is it just traditional decoration?
On many 18th century hunting bags there are several straps hanging down from which a hunter would hang small game whilst hunting keeping blood out of the inside of the hunting bag/pouch.
The tassels are decorative remnants of formerly functional thongs that were used to close a sporran. They have taken on a life of their own in the modern versions, both casual, semi-, and dress. Sometimes less is more, as in this one I made recently - also skunk.
