I will say the scottish midges might be small but their bite pound for pound is far worse than a texas/alaska/minnesota mosquito.

We have midgees, but they don't bite. They are really tiny and when they swarm one can hear the buzz of their wings quite some distance away and it looks like a cloud or smoke. You can spray water on them or spray them with bug spray and it doesn't do a thing. You can walk right through the swarm and they just fly around. Ours come out of the sand or fly over sandy areas. I don't even think the swing of a kilt would bother them. At least they aren't something that would swarm under a kilt!

You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

My apologies to Chrissss,
I forgot to pay homage to our northern neighbors.
I spent a weekend outside of Winnipeg playing 'eddyline-horsefly-wiffleball' during the day, and swatting mosquitoes all night.
Winter must be a blessing up there.
We've got the same benign midges here on our beaches. They serve to distract you long enough for the black flies to find you. Come to think of it, I like winter here too.
Cheers,
Kevin.

Every once in a while while living in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the wind would blow down from the north west with some mosquitoes that were off their authorized flight plan. They tried to compete with the New England Black Fly. What welts they do not leave the greenheads will. I hope not to anger the Scot Midge, as I hope to visit its native area next year.

Garlic!!
Eat it; bathe in it; put it in your shoes.
Probably won't help.

We have a few to spare Arlen. Why don't you take a billion or two to the U.S.A. with you, so that you will have something to remember Scotland with.

Ah the Highland midge!
My skin started itching just at the memory of them!
