While in Puerto Rico I had the honour and the privilege to be treated to some of their sugar cane-based poitín; several different bottlings and vintages, some of which was quite good, all well worth the experience.

I haven't tried any of the brands mentioned here. I'm pretty satisfied with the Puerto Rican brands I know, especially Bacardi. The 8-year-old gold is pretty smooth, and can drunk on its own. At the factory there, and there only, a 13-year-old version is sold, which is comparable to a liquore.

For my favorite drink of rum-and-coke, though, I am happy with a 3-star Barril. I have also tasted some rums from Central America with are outstanding.

My alter ego on the Mudcat discussion forum posts under the name of Rumncoke - a hangover from my days pootling around the Solent in a little yacht and frequenting the bars of Portsmouth and Southsea (Hampshire, England) as a folk singer.

The rums behind the bars were usually the dark type, Navy and Lambs - bar staff offering Bacardi - a white rum - were met with disbelieving stares.

Alas, I drink the very occasional rum and coke more for the effect than the taste, so really can't advise on the lofty heights of rum drinking for its own sake. When diet coke is not available I drink it cut with water, a tot in half a pint, which is possibly the right dilution for 'grog'.

The British Navy used lime juice to keep the scurvy at bay, hence the nickname 'Limeys' - a daily tot of it was not optional, whereas the rum was.

Some men would use bribes to get the liquor neat in the original bottles, which were used towards the end of the distribution, the usual rate was two for eight, and the bottles would be smuggled ashore to be sold or used for family celebrations, or even as a form of currency around the towns.

Best I ever had was Anniversario--imported from Venezuela but generally available at most liquor stores. Good enough to drink straight up like a brandy.

Just my topic. Rum happens to be my favourite tipple. I like just about most of them, although there are a few more expensive brands I haven't ventured to yet.

One of my favourites is this little aussie beauty which I can buy at the bar of most Wetherspoon pubs or Peckham's deli's. It's called Bundaberg, or Bundy as affectionately known there. Cheers.

As a former crewmember on a racing yacht, we devoured our fair share of Mount Gay Rum only because it was FREE However, there are I believe three different varieties of Mount Gay Rum. You might want to try Captain Morgan’s Special Reserve, very dark and smooth rum.

I had the pleasure of sampling some Bundy Rum while I was stationed in the Sinai, very strong would rather have had the VB beer.
