My last kilt was from J. Higgins. Time was quoted as 4-6 weeks, it actually was done just a bit faster, just under 4 weeks. I agree that good things are worth waiting for. The instant gratification syndrome of our culture is at least partly to blame. You know the prayer, "Oh God, give me the gift of patience and I WANT IT RIGHT NOW!!!"
What really gets my goat however, is when I have waited the time, called to find out what the delay is only to be told that they "forgot" to order the fabric, or some such that I tend to say never again from that vendor for anything

I got my kilt from the Kiltstore (10% discount ) and done with special pleating in just over four weeks.
I am very happy with my kilt...all the worrying and obsessing over measurements and getting it right were for naught.
Here is a link to my review http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...432/index.html
I might also mention (because I forgot in my original post) that even though I ordered an eight yard kilt I got a 10 yard kilt because of the special pleating...this means extra depth to the pleats. And at no extra charge. That's service!! Thank you Kiltstore.
When all is said and done I felt I got the best I could for the money I had to spend. If I could afford to have a kilt made by Barbara Tewksbury or Kathy Lare I surely would. Maybe for my third kilt. But for a first kilt...I don't know how I could have done better....anywhere.

First was my family tartan 8yd from J Higgins, as part of a large order including two custom jackets and waistcoats, etc... All but one of the Jackets arrived within about 6 weeks, and the other jacket about 6 weeks later. Next two kilts were from Heritage of Scotland (hold on the booing and hissing please) ordered while they had a 20% off sale and before I was into this forum enough to know about the Gold Bros reputation. Anyway, both were 16oz 8yd kilts machine sewn and arrived on expected schedule about 8 weeks after ordering (despite the "hold up"---no pun intended---by FEDEX while they picked my pocket for their handling customs fees). Fourth arrived just before I left for Scotland at the end of May, another 16oz 8yd special priced IoS from Scottishkilts that was here barely 6 weeks after ordering (by the way that special is still ongoing----8yd 16oz in about a dozen special tartans, including the beautiful IoS for under $300). I have about three more on my wish list for now waiting for the right time to convince my wife I should order one or two of them. Gotta do something special to deserve them first, though.

Well my buying stories are fairly simple, but I do have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by J. Higgins unexpectedly fast shipping.
I ordered Lovat Green Hose on Thursday afternoon.....and I received my package on Saturday morning!

Two Utilikilts arrived in short order - a week or so. An Amerikilt took about four weeks. Stillwater had one to me in three weeks or so.
I just received my first wool traditional, ordered from Kathy's Kilts, in a less-common tartan (Cameron Ancient Hunting 16oz). I ordered just outside the published lead time (8 weeks, I ordered at 8.5 weeks) so I could have it for my wedding this coming weekend. The kilt arrived earlier this week (7 weeks) and is absolutely magnificent. I wouldn't hesitate to order from Kathy again; her communication is fantastic and she knows her kilts and measurements. I sent the measurements according to her instructions, and she asked some questions (length was quite long) and adjusted them based on my answers, and the result was perfect.
Pics will be up after the honeymoon. :-D

You are sooo hooked now. Kathy is top of the line for sure and I've NEVER hear of her missing an important date. If there's no time, she won't take the job.
Dealing direct with your kiltmaker remains the best way to get your kilt on time.

The kilt maker told me it would take approx 8 weeks, ended up taking about 4 months, basically after 3 months, had to harrass the poor bug&er every saturday until it was ready (would turn up to his shop in person so he couldnt flob me off on the phone)...but in the end was worth the wait.
