Was the kilt new or old (18th-19thcent)?
Antique kilts can be apprased around $10,000..
If the tartan is part of the rare or old range, the material will cost more = a more expensive kilt.
If the kilt is made from a custom tartan, again more expensive kilt.

It may seem a high price but not excessive
$1000 for kilt? Thats a lot of money was it just for the kilt or sporran etc? In England I would expect to pay £300 for kilt. That price is just for the kilt itself but it should last for a long time and I wear a kilt pretty frequently in Dancing. There is 8 metres of cloth plus labour to make then ship.
It seems a lot but frankly as Henry Royce (of Rolls Royce) once said "the quality remains long after the price is forgotten"

i dont know if a kilt should be worth that much, especially if you could get it somewhere else and get it for less but with same or better quality.

Herein lies the problem, in my experience anyway you will not get the same quality for a lower price. Earlier on in the thread I was talking about my Isle of Skye kilt, I really could not have got that kilt for less with the same quality. The same can be said for my Royal Naval Association kilt. The bottom line is that sometimes you just have to pay the money to get that kind of quality.

re: expensive kilts
I bought a custom fit, four yard kilt, machine sewn kilt from a local Victoria BC Kiltmaker and I paid about $640. Comparing with other kiltmakers I think that I could have gotten a handsewn tank for close to the same price. This person charges near or over $1000 for a handsewn eight yard kilt. Unfortunately I think it was over priced. The lines never matched on the kilt and it had the "stairstep effect I've heard described somewhere.

If I bought a $1000 kilt, it better come with a coupon or something!

My first kilt was $1000. First, it was Canadian money and three years ago when I bought the kilt our dollar was not as strong. Second, that included taxes. Third, because I ordered it from an import store, I am sure the shipping fees and duty were passed on to me. And fourth, the import store has to make money too. Did I pay to much? I don't know, but I do know that it is the nicest kilt I have ever seen! I LOVE THIS KILT!!

A kilt costing 450 GBPounds = about US$900; add to that shipping (I just paid US$90.00 to ship 8 yds of 16oz tartan to the USA) plus duty and you are certainly over the US$1,000 mark. That's a lot of money for something you might only wear a few times a year. That said, it is worth it IF you can't have it made in the USA to the same standards and quality. for less of a financial outlay.

in fact you can spend a good bit more, if you look in the right(wrong) places ?
It was not too awfully long ago someone posted a link to a site in Scotland selling very upscale kilts made from custom woven fabric, made from only the finest in organically produced wool, and made into a kilt by someone of great repute. It was over a thousand pounds, as I recall.
Panache has a very good point, this place is populated be very well informed consumers. I know I have learned and benefitted a great deal from the people and information presented here.
