I am fond of the rare earth magnet method. The ones from dead hard drives work terrific. Steel plate epoxied to the back, and you are all done, no snagging, not ever.

I read some post where it was suggested that you should carve out a recess to set the magnet in.

You are suggesting just epoxy a steel plate on the pin and use the magnet on the reverse side?
