That can certainly happen. The first time I met my youngest girl's in-laws was about half an hour after buying and putting on my first kilt. They are, to put it charitably, from the more rural portion of Mississippi, a tad conservative, and were not amused by their new male relative "in a d****d skirt". We all survived it, however, and it is humorous in retrospect..
