I would normally be suspicious of an enthusiast's site that was sponsored by commercial ventures. My first impression of such an arrangement would be that advice on the site might benefit the sponsors more than the recipient.

In the case of XMarks, I've watched sponsorship develop after the site, where the sponsors reflect the good taste and style of the site itself. One thing I really appreciate about XMarks is that it has helped me decide what is appropriate for modern-day kilt wear and has shaped my own sense of style in this regard.

I won't say how many advertisers I've patronized because I don't think that should be a badge of honor, but I do buy from our advertisers because they reflect the values I appreciate.
