I'm very annoyed at myself. I was just in Ireland this past June but it was so "hot" I never considered getting a sweater for the winter.

Ah, but the bright side is I now have an excuse to go back.

Sorry to bump this thread, but you are in the same general area...

My mother came over to visit and brought an Aran Sweater to me. My step father had washed it then run it through the dryer... so now it fits me.
    Hoo ha ha ha!

She lived in Ireland for a while in the nineties and this is where they got the sweater. I do notice that it is a little short at the waist after the shrinking, and it just happens to be perfect to wear with a kilt. I think that is what she was thinking when she brought it.

The color is gray and cream, so I think it will go very well with that black leather vest in some of my pictures which also happens to have been brought back from Ireland.

    Ah, luck of the Irish.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Picked up my first Aran sweater when my wife and I honeymooned in Ireland in '86. Beautiful grey one- something was spilled on it subsequently that ate through the knitting- I mean ATE through it- so sadly I let it go.

But, since this thread came up again, I can report that my wife will give me a new one for Christmas- charcoal colored, fits nicely (I know since I bought it and tried it on when it arrived) and comes from LLBean, a little lighter weight which will cover a lot of this middle/southern AZ winter.

Ted, I hope you post a photo. sounds like a good ensemble.

I'm working on putting something together. Right now, I would probably put that sweater with my kakhi kilt. It is very thick wool, though, perhaps in part from the shrinking.

My Irish roots are very strong, and I have been feeling that pull lately. So, I am slowly hatching a plan to mix the Scottish and Irish together a bit. This sweater showing up is just another piece of it all. Well, I'm off to start a new thread. If I ever get pictures I will post them.

Hope you enjoy your new sweater, Sionnach.

Having just returned from Ireland and a visit to the Blarney Woolen Mill, I can attest that they are good people to do business with. I might point out that the sweaters they have on sale are machine knit versus the hand knit sweaters. Currently, they are offering buy 2 and get the third one free.....or three sweaters for less than $100.

For those in colder climates, they offer a heavier, hand knit sweater which is absolutely wonderful when temperatures are low. These go for approximately $100 each but are typical of what the Irish fisherman wear when going to sea. Accordingly, they do an excellent job keeping you warm and comfortable when the temperature drops.
