Somehow I don't think that really counts as a date....
It's a lot better than having to get the roots out alone though.

Actually that sounds like a very relaxing way to spend some time together. I haven't learned how to grow stuff in the desert yet but when I lived in Masachusetts I used to have people stop their cars, get out, and wander in to my backyard to look at my flower garden.

Well, when my wife is not out to se Mama Mia with her girlfriends (seven times and counting- and now they have the sing along version) we do get to spend a few moments together. We don't have a particular date night- not for trying in the past. Last night, however, we headed over to the grand opening of a new Irish pub called Lisdoonvarna- less than a mile away. It was fun, they were handing out free drinks. The Glendale Pipe and Drum Corp graced the ribbon cutting ceremony and played later on. I met others in kilts, and some born and bred Scots that live now in Sun City. XMTS got mentioned often. We had a good time and I can see a future kilt night happening. I wish I wre better with the camera, but always a little shy to take photos in public situations. I guess I'll have to get over that. My next night out with Terry will be a trip to Bisbee- two nights out (away) actually- woo hoo!

Some of our favorites are the cheapies.
Picnic in the park. Play frisbee. Swing on the swings. Hold hands a lot.
Local music jam at a coffeehouse. There's no cover charge, so we are only out the cost of two drinks and we spend an evening with a concert, of sorts.
Dancing. Local English Country dancing is a lot of fun. No Scottish dancing in our area, but the kilt is welcome.
Long walks. We live across the street from a waterfowl refuge with several really great trails that we love to walk in all seasons (well, all seasons above zero, anyway). Dogs add to the fun.
Taking a class together, just for the fun of it. More spendy, but the commitment can actually add to the fun.
Cooking a nice meal as a cooperative effort. Either one of you is making one dish and the other another, or you can both work on each part of the meal together.
Going shopping together for something fun (Christmas gifts for our kids being a favorite).
Take up a hobby together. We both make glass beads and started on the same day. While we don't often make them at the same time, the comparisons of what I make and what she makes can be fun. We have both diverged from one-another in focus and technique, so we both admire one-another's skills in areas that are unfamiliar or less practiced by the other.
I believe that real romance is about spending time delighting in one-another's company. It needn't be expensive, but that can be fun, too.

A rarely practised concept
Date night can only be done when we can get a babysitter...
So far this year it has been limited to dinner on her birthday, the movies one night, and two time to see the Pirates play.

When my daughter was young enough to need a sitter and we couldn't get one, date nite was a family affair. Part of the thinking is that we would teach her how to behave while out in public.

This week we went to HS football game. We don't have any kids in HS. We just thought it would be fun. We do it about once a season.

Me and the Mrs have a date night, also on thursdays. A local restaurant has a happy hour with half price beers and starters. They know us and miss us if we miss a week. It is an italian based place and I always go kilted. The female patrons can't take their eyes off the kilt and the guys are all drunk rednecks. (very small town). But, the guiness is cold, even though canned, and the food is good. And, the company is great.

Our favourite summer one is the Tuesday night at the local short season Baseball team in town. Admission is $4.00 (two GA for the price of one), and all other stuff is too, hot dogs, drinks, and the like. It is fun to watch new ways of blowing a play (nobody said the team wasn't creative). Also sometimes they play really great ball.
Spring and Fall it is the local Botanical Garden, truly beautiful in these times. Summers tend to be a bit hot here. We also have a nice walking trail along the river when the weather is good.
Even though we have lived in the South since 1961, we still are amazed at how pleasant the Winter weather can be much of the time.

We like to go out for a nice dinner, or occasionally to the movies. But once a week after work we stop by the Wine Sellers and have a pint or glass of wine and nice conversation with the monday evening regulars. Since our children are older now it is easier for us to get out on our own more often. We are almost always holding hands when we are out, and even something as simple as a nice long walk around the town square and sharing thoughts is fun for us. To my wife and I it is not so much what we do as just being able to spend some time together without the pressures of work, kids, school, and life in general. Best of all we are as much friends now as we were when we married 20 years ago!

Word to those who are convinced that insanity is inherited, you get from your children. They do grow up, and suddenly you and your spouse find you have time to not only enjoy life, but each other in ways not possible before. It is really a wonderful time of life.
