The kilt has become a part of my wardrobe that I like and choose to wear more than anything than anything I own.
Pants and shorts are just that, pants and shorts.Boring.
But the kilt-Yeah- that says something about a man an those that choose to wear it.
I choose not to blend in with the every day humdrum of suits and pants.
My two cents worth.

When the subject comes up, I usually say, "Hey...it's the pants alternative. Every man should have at least one kilt in his wardrobe...think about it." That usually at least puts the idea in their heads and you can see them rolling it over in their minds. Why not?
Another of my more devilish comments is, "Hey...kilts are "in"...have you been paying any attention? Six months from now you'll be looking for one and they'll be all gone because the hip people will have bought them all...where are ya' gonna be then...eh?"

I seldom wear my kilts to work (safety regulations) and don't wear them around the house that much because of wrinkling. But I do wear them out whenever I can do so for more than an hour or two.
Maybe because there is a lot of Scottish history in my city or that everyone simply knows what a kilt is, but I have never had a bad comment. Maybe a couple folks were sarcastic in the "nice kilt" comment, I don't know, but I choose to take those as good.
The only "skirt" and "dress" comments I EVER get are from my friends teasing.
Of those positive comments I would say it was a 50/50 split from men & women. The men often ask about kilts and say they wouldn't mind having one except for the expense...so I point them to SWK to look at inexpensive alternatives to start them out.
The women mostly express the "how good that looks" comments
Of course they almost always ask if I play the pipes (no...) and "The Question" comes up a lot, too...

I wear my UK's when ever I can. I've had people in grocery stores, the mall, etc asking where to buy a kilt. It seems to happen more and more as time goes by. I live in a fairly progressive minded town and it wouldn't surprise me if next summer I see more kilts being worn for everyday activities.

I'll wear a kilt to hike the hills behind us and depending on the weather (we get some pretty big storms here) when I have to go into town.

You're looking at this bass-ackwards. I don't wait for an occasion because I know every time I wear the kilt IS an occasion.

Other than that experiment I did with wearing a canvas kilt for light gardening, I don't kilt up to go out in public very often. The last time was back in June, and that was to show my grandmother who had not seen a kilt up close before.
The tartan kilt is set aside for dressing up a bit in my life, so I don't wear it too often. I also only have cream colored hose right at the moment, and I would really rather have the darker hose; coming soon I hope.
* I did happen to wear my kilt on ST Patrick's Day this year, but it wasn't exactly to do with St Patrick's Day. We have a Scotch/Irish mixed heritage celebration in my family right around the 17th, and my mother and I had dinner together. Not really dressed up, but a bit of fun. *

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I wear my kilts daily. As in every day.
To go to work and during leisure time.
I simply decided one day that I was going to start wearing them and that was it. No trepidation but a lot of thought prior to the actual plunge though.
Good luck and enjoy your kilt.

Good for you! I've taken the plunge and gone kilted full time since this summer. We'll see what happens when the Norwegian winter hits with full force, but I'm going to stick it out for as long as possible. Every day is kilt day!

For MOST people, it's other's reactions that hold them back... You have to take a big step over that "mental hurdle" of what others think. I wear a kilt DAILY, both in the shop and out in the "real world". Your have to have the strong mental determination to REALLY not care if people stare or giggle or look sideways at you. Once you can truly say "I am an original and don't care what others think", then you will be more comfortable in public.
If you're comfortable in your own skin, those around you will be comfortable. If you're NOT comfortable, those around you will be able to tell.
I can tell you this... after wearing a kilt daily for years now, I don't notice 99% of the reactions any more (and haven't for some time now). Also, when I DO notice someone staring at me, I have to try to figure out why they're staring... most times I forget that I'm in a kilt.
Stand tall and wear it with pride.
Just my $.02
SIDE STORY... This summer we had a "50's party" in town where people got dressed up in 50's clothes. I wore jeans, a white T, pack of smokes rolled up in the sleeve and black & white wing tips. While walking around town in a CROWD of women and children, someone stopped me and exclaimed "I've never seen you with pants on before!". Now THAT statement turned more than a few heads. HAHAHAHA
