A couple of days ago I stumbled upon the box of my old reenactment photos. These three are tintypes by Civil War period wet-plate artist John Coffer:

Winter Quarters: that's yours truly second from the right in the spectacles and sgt's stripes.

I also have an ambrotype - a glass plate image - but I'm trying to figure out how to successfully scan it...!

Those are very realistic looking. How long did you have to be motionless?

Depends on the lighting. On a bright day outdoors, only a second or two....

I was a CW reenactor in 1961 (Confederate cavalry, mounted) but my parents moved to Los Angeles where I continued to ride, but without the living history aspect. In the 1970s I hooked up with C Troop, 6th US Cavarly. We were a totally mounted unit-- if you didn't have a horse, you couldn't join. We recreated the Geronimo Campaign of 1885-1886. I also did CW on the side, mostly as a trooper in the 4th Texas Cavalry, CSA (again, mounted although somewhere I have a couple of photos of me as a private in Hawkin's Zouaves).

There's a photo of me and one of my best pals, Bill Hammer, in our 4th Texas uniforms on page 113 of the GUNS AND AMMO COMPLETE GUIDE TO BLACK POWDER published in 1974. If anyone has a copy kicking around perhaps they could scan it in, as my scanner/printer is down for the count.

Now that I am living in Virginia I have given some thought to going back to reenacting, probably as a foreign military observer. We'll see...

Brian, the tintypes look great. The guy that did mine is Wendell Decker (Vintage Image Studios). Wendell is great. I've been involved in reenacting for over 19 years and, this was my first tintype. I want to grab a few more at different events and eventually, an ambrotype.

Here are a few color photos, from a few different events:

I am "checking on the wounded" during the morning battle at the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky (I was the "acting" Battalion Surgeon for 3rd Battalion, 2nd Brigade)

3 of my very great friends from my unit (and yours truly on the left) during the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Perryville

Here I am showing a Cub Scout the various period medical equipment and supplies that were used during the ACW at the 2007 Scout-O-Rama inside of Churchill Downs

Living History at Fort Duffield (West Point, KY). Here I am removing a bullet from the arm of Private "Joe"

2 of my pards from the Tar Water Mess (I'm in the middle of course :mrgreen

And of course, my "toys" (as my wife calls them). These are some of my period medical equipment and supplies.

    Jimmy,
Great pics! You and the Tar Water boys look right on. Here's a last (modern) shot of yours truly. I had assembled a darn good kit before I gave up the period and sold it all! Note the M1842 musket, .69 caliber. It's an original...!

This is something which has captured my interest for years and I simply haven't followed through with pursuing it... I think I should rectify that.
