This photo shows what proper trews look like. Note the "fish-tail" back, lack of pockets, and narrow leg.

It is important to remember that trews, like kilts, come in several varieties. We sell four through our gift shop, for example.
    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/trews.htm

The tartan trousers are just that -- standard men's one-pleat trousers made from tartan cloth. Then we have both Argyle trews and Fish-tail trews, cut slightly differently to wear with the Argyle and Prince Charlie jackets, respectively. Lastly, we sell military trews which are fish-tail trews (as have been pictured in this thread) but made with no visible outside seam.

So when you see a web site offering "trews," be sure to ask just what style you will be getting to avoid dissapointment!

I was thinking of trews more on the line of what Jock Scot was talking about; however, I do like the Argyle style trews Matt has.
I prefer the high waist and get my suits and dress trousers with a fairly high waist, but not trews high.

I seem to remember paintings of men wearing high waisted knee breeches with fairly short cut jackets... perhaps for riding horses or something like that.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
