Congrats!! Wear it with pride. As to the fur shedding...I'm no expert, but I think it may reflect poor tanning of the skin. For fly tying it's one of the signs of poor tanning. Yhe skin should firmly hold the hair/fur. someone with more experience may be better able to answer, mebbe our sporran makers like Donnie.

Having said that, I just have to agree with both McMurdo and Panache: you may have seen photos of dress belts being worn with Prince Charlies, but it is not right (note, I did not say "correct"!) and it looks terrible. Whenever I see that I assume immediately that the outfit is either borrowed and the kilt is too large, or it has been hired and the guy who measured you got it all wrong! If it is worn correctly, the kilt should be high enough that no shirt could ever be seen between its waistband and the bottom of the waistcoat - no matter how much you wave your arms about! One final comment: your sporran looks uncomfortably low to me, but if you are happy with it, that's fine.

It seems you certainly got a bargain with the outfit - good for you - and I hope you get much pleasure from wearing it.

I've got a couple of things that I think would make the outfit that much better, first off if you are wearing the waistcoat, loose the belt. Secondly, hike the kilt up so that there is no white showing between the waistcoat and kilt.

LOL! Aww... Poor kitty! (Just when I read that I got this awful image in my head of a tall, white caftan-wearing Pakistani, scimitar in hand, going through a stereotypical Middle-Eastern crowded bazaar, going: "Heeeeere kitty, kitty, kitty..." in Arabic.

Well, we'll see. Maybe the shedding was because of shipping. After all, it was bounced around in a cardboard box and inside a plastic bag, going from the extreme heat into the freezing cold within the period of a few hours. Hopefully after a few uses it won't look like it underwent chemo.

Hamish: Good call on the placement of the sporran. It is indeed too low. Again, one of those things that'll get adjusted before I actually go out in public with it.

Thanks for the tips & suggestions, guys. We're not born with knowledge like this, and unless you grow up in a kilted home where such attire is common, arriving into it later in life means there's a learning curve.

As for the belt thing... The experts have spoken. I'll lose the belt. Heh. I just find it interesting that if you flip through the X-marks "formal kilted" pix thread (all 14 pages of it) , I'd say almost a good half have 'em. But to be fair, not everyone's wearing a PC either.

You may wear a belt with a fancy waist plate for dressy outfits, even with a formal Prince Charlie jacket and dress / tuxedo shirt. But you can't also wear a waistcoat with it.

From the website description:

Material: 100% Pure Wool Barathea

Buttons: Square metal buttons with Rampant Lion image

Lapels: Shinny Satin cloth

Hence, it should be wool. They are honest about all their products -- e.g. they never pretend that their kilts are wool -- it says "acrylic" right on there... But the jackets are all wool it seems.

I had seen their wares on ebay before but was quite wary of the product and the potential poor service coming from overseas. Glad to know you had a good experience.
