hmmm . . has a familiar "American" ring to it .

I agree with both points from Hector and Greg. Piper, I also liked your analogy of "hyphenated Americans". My co-workers and friends usually say something like "oh, he's Scottish". I usually correct them saying "no, I'm American but, I have Scottish, Irish, German, Welsh, Polish, Cherokee, Creek and Mohawk ancestors".

    Not Scottish

Wearing a kilt should be independent of a persons citizenship or ancestry as some members of this forum happen to be. We have members of dance groups and pipe bands who participate in the culture without issue.

Some time ago, 1748 to be exact, two brothers arrived in Boston Harbor on a ship out of Dublin. These brothers were as best we can tell members of the King's Army and were most likely from Aberdinshire in Scotland. As best I can tell That's about 12 generations, so to claim I am Scottish would be like saying forget about everyone else in my family tree. I have Scottish, Irish, German, Italian, Dutch, Swiss,English, American Native bloodlines and lots others that I don't know about. Which makes me an American.

I can celebrate my heritage, which ever heritage I choose, in the way I wish to. If by chance I choose to wear a kilt, well I choose to wear a kilt. I guess if I were wearing overalls, I would be honoring my Iowa ancestors.

And yes I am a Rampant Dandelion as well!

I think this would only be the case in the US, and possibly Canada. In Europe, at least, it would be unthinkable to say "I'm Scottish", unless you actually come from Scotland.
