That and its creation of gangsterism are, I think, the main reasons the electorate gave up on Prohibition.

Two examples of the sort of culture in which I was raised:
    1) My father bragged for the rest of his life that he was the first to score a legal case of Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra after Repeal.
2} I was 12 years old when I first discovered that "the Noble Experiment" was not the process by which one learned to make bathtub gin.

I'm off to the pub 'round 4:00. I certainly raise one (or several) in toast.

I say good riddance of the foolish idea that one can legislate belief... but then I see the moronic laws and amendments being proposed and realize that we have a long way to go. I shall raise my glass of Irish Whisky tonight for that.

We're having a big, loud session tonight at the pub. A few set dancers are coming in from Madison, so if anybody wants to join us, we'll be at Suds O'Hanahan's on East Grand Avenue in Beloit tonight!

It was the correction of probably one of the weirdest Constitutional experiments ever introduced.

Prohibition did not improve the moral character of the US population but rather encouraged the growth of criminality and the gangs who were happy to supply illicit liquor and who simply changed the nature of what they supplied upon repeal.

There always have been and no doubt always will be those who want to make others live their lives and make their choices in the way that they do themselves. The difference between persuasion and compulsion never seems to enter their heads.

The repeal restored personal choice and that should be celebrated. int::soda:

We'd not have three supermarkets and a couple dozen bars and liquor stores in our little town of 6,800. The hospital would be much smaller. The police force would be token. Instead of four treatment agencies in town we'd probably only have one small one. City court revenues would be nil. We probably wouldn't need such a large DV shelter.

Much to be said for booze in economic terms.

I see your point, Ron. The problem is, extremes in either direction are harmful. It's not the booze that cause the problem- that's like saying spoons made Rosie O'Donnel fat. The problem is that we don't have any kind of concept of healthy moderation in this country. That's why there is such a huge problem with... well... most things here. Christmas is disgutingly commercial, my kids can't have snowball fights because someone may get a little bruise, my nephew's soccer league don't allow goalies or scorekeeping because if a team looses a game, their feelings might get hurt. Man, we have no concept of a middle ground! I drink. I love my single malt. But I have never- everhit my wife, drive drunk, gotten into a bar fight, etc. We have to keep things in perspective. My uncle is an alcoholic, my grandmother was an alcoholic. I know I have a predisposition to it, so I make the choice not to become one. So...

to being able to choose not to become an alcoholic. (Those glasses are filled with Diet Coke- I already had my one shot for the evening.)
